About ZIND

We are an Indian Bollywood dance studio. We exist to create, teach and perform the art of Indian dance to ages 5+ to adults! We teach individuals (Most of who do not have any prior dance experience) how to dance, step by step, to your favorite Bollywood songs from a professional, enthusiastic instructor. We also provide ample opportunities to get on stage and show off learned skills and talent! We create original and energetic dance routines that wins over a crowd every time!

We also set up events/teachings for our students to learn difference aspects of the indian culture – including traditions, holidays, festivals etc. While being in America, we recognize that it is important to stay true to our roots and spread awareness of our heritage!

We teach, encourage and implement our four pillars:

  • Fierceness

  • Individuality

  • Respect

  • Empowerment

We build confidence through positive encouragement and support as well as performances on stage. If we can train a 5 year old to go on stage and perform a dance in front of 500 people, think about what they can do when they are 25 years old in front of a boardroom. We teach our students to “own your dance”, meaning to be accountable, take charge, push past any nervousness/fear, persist, show up and OWN it! As a result, in the same way, we are training them to subconsciously “own your life”; to be accountable, take charge, push past fear, persist, show up and own it. We are setting up our students for life – through the avenue of Indian dance.

Using original, dynamic and highly ENERGETIC choreography, our dance studio embraces different dance styles such as Bollywood (Primarily), semi-classical, hip hop, fusion and more; leaving its audience entertained and filled with awe.

Our students range from the ages of 5+ years to adults in their 50’s  and 60’s. We are building a community (through dance) for kids, youths, people to find a place of belonging, be a part of a team, mentor/encourage/support each other while wanting to stay in touch with their roots and to bring a part of the indian culture to their families/friends.

About Our Staff

We are people who not only love to dance but also love to impart our talents to others. Our director and our instructors come from all different dance backgrounds and from all different walks of life for ONE purpose: to spread the love and art of Indian dance. We know the value of having culture and dance in our lives and want to share our gifts with the world. Our greatest moments of pride and joy are seeing our students on stage showing off their talents and hard work. Students often come and express their gratitude to us for being instructors, but, it is us, who are grateful for the opportunity.

Nina Kottakuzhiyil
Director

I started training in Bharatanatyam (Indian Classical Dance) at the age of 6 as a student of Kalairani Natya Salai (KNS) under the teachings of Guru Rani David. In high school, I started choreographing cinematic and folk dances and continued to teach and choreograph for local Indian community programs. I graduated from KNS in my senior year of high school. I would have loved to further my training to an Arangetram level, but put it on hold to attend St. Johns University Queens, NY to pursue a Doctorate in Pharmacy.

When I went to college, one of the first things my dad told me was to “not even think about dance”. So, of course, being an 18 year old with my first real taste of freedom, I quickly looked up and auditioned for the all female south Asian dance team (SJU Raaz) the very first week of college. After countless performances, placing in numerous competitions, judging various competitions and, oh yeah, receiving my Pharmacy degree, I returned home to Maryland.

The dancing still didn’t stop. I contacted my Guru and started to train for my arangetram. I’m sure my parents thought “omg – This girl is STILL trying to dance?!”. But, yes, I was. I finally completed my arangetram in October of 2013. About eight months later, I opened up NinaKshi, LLC on June 21, 2014 (a day before my birthday!) I still work as a Pharmacist, but dance has always and will always be my gift, my outlet, my blessing and my calling. I knew from an adolescent age that I wanted to open up a dance studio to Create dance routines, Teach dance lovers and Perform the art of Indian Dance. I am blessed enough to know what I want to do and who I want to be in this thing called life.
