Anti-Aging Effects of Dance

Forget the eye creams, crossword puzzles and smoothies.

You know what REALLY helps the anti-aging of your brain? 

Yup, you guessed it, DANCE.

So how is dance different than normal exercise and how is it more beneficial?

Well for one, with traditional workouts and exercise – you’re either following or just doing. As in, you’re just following the instructor’s moves in a class or you’re just going through the motions of a workout.

When it comes to dance, you’re actually learning steps. You’re learning a routine under a certain amount of time. That means new formations, steps, hand gestures, head movements, hand eye coordinations are being added and modified almost every class. 

Also, there are times where you will be asked to showcase your learning. And this means you will be executing under controlled pressure.

In a study that was done that the anti-aging effects of dance, researchers found that there were increased levels of activity in the hippocampus area of the brain. This is the part of the brain that controls memory, learning, and balance. 

While the studies and official results are still out on this, I think every dancer can agree that dancing as a constant activity in their daily lives has greatly benefited their overall physical, emotional and mental state!
